How to see which app is using your Mac’s camera — and stop it

Updated

Open Control Center in the menu bar: while the camera is on, its top line names the app using it. Quit that app with ⌘Q, then take its access away in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera. The small green light next to the camera is wired to it, so no app can use the camera without that light.

The built-in way

  1. Look at the menu bar. While the camera is on, open Control Center (the two switches in the menu bar): the top line names the app using the camera — or the one that used it in the last moments.
  2. Take its access away. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and switch off the apps that shouldn’t use it. An app that already has the camera open keeps it until you quit it — so quit that app too (⌘Q).
  3. Check again later. There is no history: if an app turned the camera on while you were away, macOS doesn’t keep a list.

Know it the moment it happens

Control Center answers only when you think to look. Still Studio answers by itself, around the notch.

On a Mac without a notch, the halo appears at the top centre of the screen.

Questions

Can any app turn off the camera’s light?

No. On Apple’s laptops the light is wired to the camera’s power, so it is always on when the camera works. That’s what makes it trustworthy.

Is covering the camera enough?

A cover blocks the picture, not the microphone, and it is easy to forget it’s there during a call. Knowing who turns the camera on — and taking the access away — protects you without tape.

Does macOS keep a history of camera use?

No. Control Center shows the app using the camera now, or the one that just used it; there is no list to look back at later.
