Why is the green light next to my MacBook camera on?
The green light next to your MacBook’s camera means one thing: an app is receiving a picture from the camera right now. It is wired to the camera’s power, so it can’t be on without the camera working, and it can’t be faked off. Open Control Center to see which app it is.
Common reasons it’s on
- A video call — in a call app or a browser tab — sometimes still open in another window or a background tab.
- An app that checks your face or takes a profile photo.
- A browser tab that was given the camera earlier and keeps it while the tab is open.
- Photo Booth, QuickTime Player or a screen-recording app with the camera turned on.
How to find the app
Open Control Center in the menu bar: the first line names the app using the camera. Then quit that app (⌘Q) or close the tab. To stop it for good: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera — switch the app off.

Questions
Why is the light still on after my call ended?
The call app or a browser tab still holds the camera. Quit the app (⌘Q) or close the tab; the light goes out as soon as the camera stops.
Can an app use the camera without the light?
No. The light is wired to the camera’s power: when the camera works, the light is on. An app can’t switch one on without the other.
Should I cover the camera?
A cover blocks the picture but not the microphone, and it is easy to forget during a call. Knowing which app turns the camera on, and taking its access away, does more.
