Mac apps for lawyers: a private toolkit that keeps client data on your own machine
The right Mac apps for lawyers don’t hand client material to a third party. macOS covers the basics: Preview for PDFs, Pages for drafting, FileVault to encrypt the disk. For dictation, translation, screenshots and message exports, use apps that process everything locally, such as Volna, Kalila, SimpleShot and Textbound, so a memo, a contract or a client’s texts never sit on someone else’s server.
Why it matters where the work happens
The duty of confidentiality extends to the tools you use. In the United States, Rule 1.6(c) of the ABA Model Rules requires lawyers to make reasonable efforts to prevent the inadvertent or unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, client information; bar guidance on cloud services expects you to know where the data goes and who can see it. Every online dictation or translation service is one more party holding client text, with its own retention rules and its own risk of a breach.
An app that does the work on your Mac takes that question off the table: there is no third party to vet and no outside copy to keep track of or lose.
The toolkit
| Task | App | What leaves the Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Dictating memos, letters and notes | Volna | Nothing; speech is recognised on the Mac |
| Translating a contract, a letter or a judgment | Kalila | Nothing; translation runs on the device |
| Exporting a client’s text messages for a case | Textbound | Nothing; it only reads the Messages history on the Mac |
| Capturing web evidence, redacting before sharing | SimpleShot | Only a fingerprint, if you ask for a time proof |
| Finding a moment in hours of video | Seekframe | Nothing; the model runs on the Mac |
For screenshots, SimpleShot spots the e-mail addresses, phone and card numbers, IBANs and keys on a capture and covers them with solid pixels before you send it to opposing counsel or a client; its time proof shows that a capture of a web page already existed at a given moment, with the time taken from SimpleShot’s server. Seekframe helps with surveillance or deposition footage: describe the scene and it opens the video at that point.
Already on your Mac
- Preview fills in and signs PDFs, adds notes and combines documents.
- FileVault encrypts the disk, so a lost laptop doesn’t expose client files.
- Passwords keeps strong, unique passwords and two-factor codes for court portals and research services.
- Lockdown Mode, for lawyers whose cases make them a target of sophisticated attacks.

Questions
Can lawyers use cloud dictation and translation services?
Many bars allow it if you take reasonable care: know where the data is stored, who can access it and how long it’s kept, and get the client’s consent where needed. Tools that keep the data on your Mac spare you that review altogether.
Do I need an agreement with you to use these apps for client work?
No client data reaches us. The apps have no server for your recordings, documents or messages, and collect no analytics, so there is nothing for us to receive, store or disclose.
Are these apps free?
Volna, Kalila and SimpleShot are free. Textbound and Seekframe are free with limits, and each one’s Pro version is a one-time $19.99, with no subscription.
Can Textbound export chats from other messaging apps?
No. Textbound reads Messages on the Mac: iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations, including those from an iPhone synced with Messages in iCloud.
